Summer trail work:
MAY 2006
Bear Lake - Primrose: The Forest
Service awarded a contract in August for 9.4 miles of trail reconstruction
on the Iditarod Trail between Bear Lake and Primrose Campground,
north of Seward. Work will include the reconstruction and construction
of trail to meet national standards, providing several excellent
year around loop oportuntities when combined with other area trails
to the Primrose Campground. The contractor will begin work by September
2007.
Winter Creek - Last year nearly six miles of new trail were
constructed via contract along the Upper Winter Creek portion of
the Iditarod Trail, between the "T" junction east of Alyeska
Resort and Berry Pass. Once completed, the new section of trail
will provide 6.4 miles of back country trail through outstanding
scenery between Girdwood and Berry Pass, eventually connecting through
the Twentymile Valley to the Seward Highway. Work needed to complete
the 6.4 segment is planned for 2006.

Seward-Girdwood Trail Update
The U.S. Forest Service accepted public comment this summer
on the proposal to re-build the Iditarod Trail from Seward to Girdwood.
The project is now awaiting selection of one of four possible routes
by Forest Supervisor Joe Mead, according to Dan Golden, Forest Service
project manager.
It will be a massive project, that
could carry between a $15 to $21 million price tag. The proposal
calls for approximately 23 bridges between Seward and Girdwood,
some fairly substantial.
