Historic Resources:
The National Trail System Act (as amended) calls for the
identification and protection of the historic route and its historic
remnants. However, it is apparent form legislative history of the
amended National Trails Act that Congress did not intend to fully
protect every inch of the historic trail system or every historic
site.
Using the 1977
Bureau of October Recreation report, The Iditarod (Seward-Nome
Route) and other Gold Rush Trails as a starting point, the Iditarod
Trail Project Office began to identify, evaluate, and make recommendations
for the historic route and its components.
Identification
of Sites and Segments
There are two trail components, site and segments, which have been
inventoried during the course of the project. Although each known
historic site and trail segment has been identified, adequate research
and site recordation of the Iditarod National Historic TRail will
require extensive research and field work far exceeding the immediate
requirements of the initial planning program.
